Thanksgiving

I'm still sorting Berlin photos, so I thought I'd post Thanksgiving first.  We decided to have a big feast again at our place, but on Saturday this year since it's obviously not a holiday in Italy and therefore no one has Thursday off.  Because space in the kitchen is so limited, and once the turkey goes in the oven there is room for nothing else, we had to plan a schedule and start cooking early.  The pies were baked the night before (2 pumpkin and 2 apple), and the stuffing was made in the morning on the day of.

Morning preparations: stuffing fixings on the left, seasonings for the turkey on the right.

Having learned our lesson from last year we knew that for 5kg of mashed potatoes we would need about an hour to boil the water and boil the potatoes.  Our stove is weak enough as it is, and with the oven going, it's even weaker...

We ordered a 6kg turkey, but when Katie and Claudio went to pick it up they were surprised with an 8kg bird instead.  Have I mentioned how small our oven is??  We were worried that it wasn't going to fit.

But obviously we managed.  Katie Wax (shown here) was in charge of the turkey, and it was delicious!

Appetizers in the hall.

A hard day's work but worth the effort!

We had a lot of different people over this year compared to last, and many of the Italians we invited had never seen a turkey cooked this way before.

The calm before the storm.

Our total was 18: 11 Italians, 6 Americans, and 1 English/Italian (guess who that is...).

If it weren't so much work I would want a Thanksgiving feast every month!

So thankful for the changes in my life this year and all the new people I have met.

Halloween

Last Saturday we had our second annual Halloween party at our apartment.  A few of the Italians-- Claudio and Flavio, for example-- celebrated with us last year, but for others, including Tom, this was their first Halloween extravaganza.

Clark Kent and Lois Lane

Superman!

All of us!  (Katie F. as Marilyn Monroe, Claudio as Elvis, a few of Claudio's friends as vampires, Katie W. as Black Swan, Tom as Superman, Me as Lois Lane, Nick as a Roman street vendor (the type that won't leave you alone when you're eating dinner...), and Jasmine as the Hamburgler.)
