Egypt, day 2: Felucca Ride

We spent our first evening in Luxor on the Nile on a felucca, a traditional Egyptian wooden boat. We sailed for a bit, taking in the views, and then made a visit to Banana Island. After that we floated back to town at sunset, which is a sight I will never forget.

Our captain, pushing us off from a large cruise ship

Unfortunately there was little wind on the first leg of our journey, so we hooked up with a tug boat that helped us along

As you can see from the other three boats tied up to the tug boat, this is routine

Breathtaking views! The lush green in the foreground contrasted with the stark desert in the background reminds one why civilization began here, and how dependent the ancient Egyptians were on the Nile.

With our hilarious captain

An ibis, the sacred bird of the astronomer god Thoth

Banana Island

Papyrus on the right!

Bananas!!

It felt like we were in a jungle

More donkeys, here with our captain

This guy was freshly shaved, so his hair was a little wonky :)

We also ran into the CUTEST little Billy goats. They were just like puppies, wagging their tales when we played with them.

They started to follow us

I think they wanted to come with us

Michael was the only one brave enough to try the bananas. Technically since we were the ones peeling the bananas (and could therefore be guaranteed of their cleanliness) they were okay to eat, but none of us felt like risking it.

Back on the boat Katie and I compare dirty feet

Our captain had a portable radio and so we danced!

We still needed a little help with the lack of wind, so Michael and our captain rowed us back. Look at how dirty my feet are!

The beautiful sunset. They say it's legendary, and whoever "they" are, they're not lying.

Back at our hostel, round two of koshary, this time with a side of falafal

Conquered!
